American education is shifting gears, from a system that measures students against students to one that values mastery of central concepts and skills -- striving for proficiency in publicly acknowledged standards of academic performance. This new shift means a change for students, teachers, administrators, and parents. It requires new thinking and new tools. Shifting Gears is designed to help educators make the necessary changes in the curriculum. As a companion to Front-End Alignment (Education Trust) and Learning in Overdrive (see page 31), Shifting Gears aims to connect the operative parts of standards-based education -- standards, assessments, curriculum, and instruction -- in order to ensure the success of students and schools.
